Alex’s Transmedia Role

From the point of view of the lore and the structure of the franchise, Flight 462 is not a simple filler, but fulfills three fundamental narrative and logistical functions:

  • The Speed of Biological Contagion: The web series definitively confirms one of the most stringent biological rules of the Wildfire virus introduced by the CDC: the transformation occurs within minutes (sometimes seconds) after the host’s clinical death, regardless of whether the individual has been bitten or not. Marcus dies of natural causes (a stress-induced heart attack) and wakes up immediately, demonstrating that the passengers were all already infected through airborne transmission long before boarding.
  • The direct connection to Season Two of FTWD: The wreckage of the flight 462 will become the focus of episode 2×03 of Fear the Walking Dead. Some survivors of the yacht Abigail (including Chris and Daniel) will search the crash site for clothes and medical supplies, stumbling upon a barricade of suitcases created by Alex to protect young Jake’s injured and gangrenous legs.
  • The introduction of one of the first “Pure Survivors”: Alex’s character previews the psychological evolution of the franchise’s great leaders. From her first minute on board, Alex shows no denial or disbelief; she knows exactly what’s happening in the outside world (likely due to military or government ties) and doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice or isolate the infected to ensure the group’s survival, a pragmatism that allows her to survive even the plane crash.

Production and Technical Background

  • Fragmented Distribution: Made up of 16 very short episodes lasting less than a minute each, the web series was broadcast in the United States during the commercial breaks of Season Six of The Walking Dead between 2015 and 2016.
  • Emmy Nominations: Despite being a horror series (not usually considered for this kind of awards), thanks to its incredible visual tension and management of claustrophobic spaces, the series received two nominations at the 2016 Emmy Awards in the categories of Outstanding Short Form Drama Series and Outstanding Actress (Michelle Ang).
  • Realistic Special Effects: To recreate the interior of the aircraft, the production purchased a section of a real, decommissioned passenger plane and mounted it on a hydraulic oscillating system to realistically simulate the turbulence and the terrifying final dive.

What happens to the boy from “Flight 462”?

Jake survives the plane crash but is left severely burned and with leg injuries. In the second season of Fear the Walking Dead, Alex carries him to a life raft, but Victor cuts the towline, abandoning them in the sea. Jake is later mercy-killed by Alex herself to spare him further suffering.

Who survived “Flight 462”?

The only passengers to survive the initial impact and reach land are Alex and Jake, as well as a few other civilians who are quickly eliminated by walkers on the beach.

Where the plane from “Flight 462” crashes?

The wreckage of the commercial aircraft crashes on a desolate beach in Baja California, Mexico, along the shipping lane taken by the yacht Abigail.

August 6th, 2010
A plane departs from Los Angeles airport bound for Phoenix. The passengers prepare for takeoff, among them Alex and Jake. Jake is on the phone with his mother, who wasn’t able to board the flight and is instead renting a car. Suddenly, he hears screams through the phone, and notices that various parts of the city are experiencing blackouts. During the flight, Alex becomes suspicious of a passenger near her who doesn’t seem well.
The man gets up and goes to the restroom, where he stays for a long time. Alex alerts the flight attendant, who, with the help of a police officer on board, manages to open the lavatory door.
The man inside collapses lifeless to the floor. While attempting to resuscitate him, everyone notices a bleeding wound on his side. The man suddenly reanimates and attacks his wife, biting her neck. The police officer shoots him, but in vain. In the end, it is Alex who finally puts him down with a shot to the head, and does the same to his fatally wounded wife. Meanwhile, the flight attendant realizes she has been scratched by the infected man, and the passengers soon discover that one of the officer’s bullets has pierced a window.
The window gives way, causing decompression and sending the plane into a steep descent. Panic erupts among the passengers. As the plane plummets, Alex confesses to Jake that she took his mother’s place on the flight.
From the ground, Nick (FTWD Season 1) sees the plane losing altitude and crashing from the sky.
