Timeline The Althea Tapes – SPOILER ALERT

Complete summary table at the bottom of the page.

The value of “The Althea Tapes”

From the perspective of analyzing the overall history of the franchise, this web series clarifies Althea’s psychology and introduces key elements for future seasons:

  • The video camera as an emotional shield: For Althea, the video camera isn’t just a work tool, but a true psychological shield. Interviewing others allows her to remain a detached observer, avoiding emotional attachment to those destined to die. This tape after tape editing builds the gigantic archive that will become the fulcrum of the plot when other factions attempt to steal her recordings to hide their own secrets.
  • The Invisible link to the CRM (Civic Republic Military): Although the mysterious military organization CRM is not explicitly named in these 6 micro-episodes, The Althea Tapes takes place immediately after Althea’s close encounter with Isabelle (the CRM helicopter pilot seen in the season five episode The end of everything). Althea’s obsession with recording and cataloging every little testimony increases during this period, driven by the awareness that there are dark and extremely powerful forces that are actively erasing the traces of the past.

The Found Footage Style

Released in the summer of 2011 to bridge the first and second halves of season five of Fear the Walking Dead, the series is shot entirely in first-person. The viewer sees exactly what Althea sees through her camera’s viewfinder, while the journalist remains off-screen, interacting with people she meets by chance and specifically chosen to give the interviews an extremely realistic, raw, and spontaneous tone, similar to a real war documentary.

The purpose of Althea’s tapes in Fear the Walking Dead

Althea records interviews with survivors to preserve humanity’s historical memory before the apocalypse. She believes that people’s stories are the most precious resource to pass on to future generations.

The season of the web series “The Althea Tapes”

The series takes place chronologically during the events of the fifth season of Fear The Walking Dead, providing an in-depth look at Althea’s solitary travels in Texas, spanning unspecified moments of the apocalypse but also far into the distance.

Main characters in “The Althea Tapes”

Aside from Althea, who conducts the interviews behind the camera, the subjects interviewed are all unique secondary characters, whose stories serve to enrich the context and difficulties of the world around them.

April 2013
After meeting Isabelle, Al records an interview with herself, confessing that she places her trust in the future and reiterating the importance of interviews for future generations.
In different moments after the apocalypse
Al interviews Ed, a former actor trying to return to his family in Texas. In exchange for the interview, Al offers him some noodles and a ride to his hometown, Tyler.
Al interviews C.J. and Earl, a curious pair of travelers. The young woman was saved by the older man during a difficult time in her wandering, and from that moment on, they never left each other’s side, becoming each other’s defense.
Al interviews Clark, a family man and former bank manager, now living in a secluded cabin with his wife and two children. He has left his hideout to check if the vault of his bank is still where he left it.
Al interviews Jody, a former surgeon who amputated her own arm after being bitten by her turned husband. Despite her disability, she remains confident in her ability to help others.
Al interviews Samora, a young woman who, even before the apocalypse, suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder and who, 46 days earlier, had inadvertently caused the death of her sister. After contemplating suicide, she saw a plane flying over the mountains (FTWD 5) and stubbornly decided to reach it, eventually joining Althea’s community.

P.S.: The dates in the timeline are approximate, but everything happened more or less around those days.
