Hannah’s desperate attempt to reach the local military evacuation center reveals a dramatic truth: the government defense lines around Atlanta were already crumbling under the weight of the first waves of infection, just 48 hours after the official start of the crisis.

This sudden collapse of north-central Georgia isn’t just a background detail, but the keystone that determines the entire geography of the first season of The Walking Dead:

• The illusion of Atlanta as a haven: The chaos Hannah experienced in real time explains why the media and pre-recorded messages continued to indicate Atlanta and the CDC (Centers of Disease Control) as safe and fortified zones. In the first episode of Season One (Days Gone Bye), Rick encounters Hannah twice. The first time, he runs away in terror, realizing the horror of the new world. The second time, after taking up arms and becoming more aware, he returns to her, kneels, and before shooting her, says, “I’m sorry this happened to you.”
This gesture carries powerful symbolism: it represents Rick’s residual humanity. Killing Hannah is not an act of defense, but an act of mercy. Understanding the story of love, sacrifice, and terror that Hannah experienced two months earlier makes Rick’s compassion even more poignant and structured within the official narrative.

What happens to Hannah’s children?

In the series’ final clip, Hannah manages to help Jamie and Billy escape. Their subsequent fate is never shown in the main TV series, leaving the ending open-ended.

August 6th, 2010
Hannah is a divorced mother who is taking her two children, Jamie and Billy, to their father Andy.
They get into an accident in which Hannah loses consciousness. When she wakes up, she realizes the children are missing. She leaves the car and heads toward Andy’s nearby house.
Along the way, she sees people being devoured and the dead eating the living.
Shortly before, Andy had shot his new wife Judy, who had turned after being bitten, and hid her body in the living room by rolling it up in a carpet. Still trapped in the carpet, Judy manages to break free and attacks the two children playing in the room, but Hannah finally puts her down for good.
Andy decides to go to the neighbors’ house to get the keys to their pickup truck, but he is devoured by the couple’s children, already turned. When Hannah sees that her ex-husband hasn’t returned, she decides to leave with the kids and head for a nearby military shelter. On the way, however, they are attacked by a group of walkers. Hannah pushes her children away and sacrifices herself, letting herself be devoured to save them.

Her half-devoured body remains outside for months, until Rick encounters it (it will be the first zombie he sees), finally putting an end to her unliving state.
