The beginning of a unique anthology series

The “Evie/Joe” episode is the sparkling premiere of the anthology spin-off Tales of the Walking Dead. This chapter stands out in the Walking Dead universe for its unusual tone, blending the franchise’s signature survivalism with road movie dynamics and romantic comedy undertones.

Character analysis and dynamics

  • Joe: A methodical survivalist who predicted the apocalypse years before it began, isolating himself completely in a high-tech bunker for 452 days. His only emotional anchor is his dog Gilligan. The loss of his trusty four-legged companion disrupts his routine, prompting him to abandon his fortress to seek out Sandra, a prepper he only met via chat before the global collapse.
  • Evie: Joe’s exact opposite. She’s a woman driven by spirituality, crystals, good energy, and even a martial arts expert (capoeira). She too set out on a journey for a sentimental reason: to find her husband Steven, from whom she had separated shortly before the end of the world.
  • The Ideological Contrast: The crux of the narrative lies in the evolution of their relationship. Joe represents the cold logic and cynicism of extreme survivalism; Evie embodies hope, art, and the need for human connection. From “frenemies” bound by fate (and a pair of handcuffs), the two end up rediscovering the beauty of sharing.

Sandra’s plot twist and the “Folly Photos” bunker

When Joe and Evie finally reach Sandra’s bunker (hidden behind the Folly Photos sign), Joe’s romantic illusion collides with a brutal reality. Sandra has completely lost her mind due to loneliness and paranoia. After drugging Joe with marijuana-infused sweets, she reveals a macabre truth: she used pre-apocalyptic chat rooms to lure men to her hideout for the sole purpose of robbing and killing them. Evie’s timely intervention and Joe’s reaction put an end to Sandra’s madness, leaving the two with a newfound awareness and a lamb to care for.

“Evie/Joe” timeline trivia and details

  • The Beginning of the Apocalypse: As evidenced by the dates (September-November 2011), this story is set approximately a year after the global outbreak. This makes it one of the closest chronological interludes to the beginning of the collapse, showing us a phase of the world in which technological resources (such as powered bunkers) and memories of the old civilization are still vivid.
  • Days 402-457: The episode begins on day 402, but Joe and Evie’s real journey officially begins on day 452 of the outbreak and ends around day 457. Just five days of walking and personal growth, but they will forever change both of their approaches to survival.

The meaning of the little lamb in the episode

The animal found by the protagonists during their journey is not a simple background element, but adds a strong symbolic and emotional charge to the narrative.

  • The discovery and the confrontation: Evie finds the baby sheep and immediately decides to take it in. Initially, Joe shows his more cynical and pragmatic prepper side, suggesting that the animal could become their dinner. Evie, true to her empathetic philosophy, firmly opposes him, saving his life.
  • Gilligan’s Legacy: At the end of the episode, when the two decide to continue their journey together as true allies, Joe asks Evie if the animal has a name. It’s Joe who suggests the name Skipper. This gesture is an explicit tribute to Gilligan, his beloved Doberman who died at the beginning of the episode. Accepting Skipper into the group marks Joe’s process of mourning and his reopening to the world.
  • A rarity in the franchise: The Walking Dead universe has historically been merciless with animals (just think of the famous goat Tabitha in Eastman’s episode of the sixth season of the original series). Skipper is a happy exception: he survives the episode and walks towards the future alongside the two protagonists, becoming a rare symbol of hope and a new beginning.

What is the future of Evie and Joe?

At the end of the episode, the two protagonists confidently walk towards a new future with the lamb. They will not appear again in the other series of the Universe, leaving the ending open-ended.
